Troubled by hot flushes, poor sleep or kilos building up around your belly? This menopause check shows you in a few minutes what fits your symptoms. You get advice based on the Dutch GP guideline, with sources, and you decide for yourself whether you then want help with weight, eating and exercise.

Good to know: the support is provided by Overgewicht Nederland B.V. (Amersfoort). If you fill in the form, your details go to that organisation. Amounts as stated by the provider on 21-10-2026. More about this site and the programme.

In brief

  • You answer questions about your symptoms, your cycle and your health. Your answers stay on your own device.
  • The advice follows the NHG-Standaard De overgang (2022) and information from the Voedingscentrum (Netherlands Nutrition Centre).
  • If there is a warning sign, such as bleeding after a year without periods, you will first be advised to call your GP (huisarts).
  • No hormones or other medicines are prescribed or sold via this site. You discuss that with your GP (huisarts).

How the menopause test works

The check has four short parts. First your symptoms and how much they bother you. Then your cycle: do you still have periods, irregular periods, or none for a year already? Then a few questions about your health and what you already take. Finally, you choose what you mainly want help with. Height, weight and waist circumference are optional. If you fill them in, you also get advice about your weight.

Each question is on its own screen, with large buttons that are easy to tap on your phone. You enter your height and weight together, and you immediately see your BMI. If you leave by accident, your answers will still be there next time. One button clears everything.

Menopause symptoms and what the guideline advises

The Dutch GP guideline looks mainly at how much the symptoms bother you, not only at which symptoms you have. That is why the check also asks how much trouble you experience. The table shows, per situation, what the guideline and the Thuisarts decision cards mention.

Hormones are available as a patch, pill, gel or spray, according to the decision cards. Which form suits you is something you discuss with your GP (huisarts). That is why you will not find prices of products or brands of hormones on this site. You can, however, read how to prepare for that conversation in discussing your weight and symptoms with your GP.

Weight and belly fat during the menopause

Thuisarts lists gaining weight among the symptoms the menopause can cause. The Voedingscentrum (Netherlands Nutrition Centre) writes that energy use at rest appears to decrease after the menopause, and that women going through the menopause are more likely to have fat around the organs in the abdomen. You can see this in a larger waist measurement. That is why the check also asks about your waist circumference, if you wish.

If you want to know how much energy your body really uses at rest, a resting metabolism measurement in Amersfoort will show you. How support works in this phase is explained in losing weight during and after the menopause. If you come out at a BMI of 25 or higher, the check also looks at whether the free lifestyle programme via basic health insurance (basisverzekering) suits you.

When to see your GP straight away

Have you not had a period for a year or longer and then get bleeding again after all? Then contact your GP (huisarts). According to patient information based on the NVOG guideline, the cause is usually harmless, but it must always be examined. That is why the check asks about this and then puts the advice at the top.

If the symptoms bother you so much that your work, sleep or relationships suffer, do not wait too long either. Especially with severe problems, the guideline mentions more options.

What this check does differently

  • No selling of products. This check ends with advice and sources, which you can print out for your GP.
  • Warning signs first. Bleeding after the menopause and conditions for which hormones are not suitable take priority in your result.
  • Honest about lifestyle. We say so plainly: losing weight helps your health, but has not been shown to help against hot flushes.
  • Privacy. Your health answers are only included if you tick a separate box for that. See how we handle your data.

Frequently asked questions about the menopause check

How do I know if I am going through the menopause?

You often notice it through a more irregular cycle and symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats or poor sleep. A test does not give certainty; your GP (huisarts) looks at your symptoms and your cycle. That is why the check asks about both.

Is an online menopause test reliable?

An online test can help you put your symptoms in order, but it does not give a diagnosis. This check uses the NHG-Standaard De overgang and names the source with every piece of advice. Your GP (huisarts) looks further, for example at other causes of your symptoms. Print your result and take it with you.

When am I eligible for hormone therapy?

According to the NHG-Standaard De overgang (2022), hormone therapy can be an option if hot flushes cause you serious problems. The authors then consider the risks acceptable for use of less than five years. You weigh up the pros and cons together with your GP (huisarts). For some conditions, such as hormone-sensitive cancer or thrombosis, hormones are not suitable according to Thuisarts.

Can I order menopause hormones online?

Hormones are medicines, and you get them on prescription from a doctor who knows your situation. No hormones are prescribed or sold via this site. Discuss with your GP (huisarts) whether hormones suit you, especially if you have had a condition such as thrombosis, a stroke or breast cancer.

Do herbs or supplements help against hot flushes?

According to the NHG-Standaard De overgang, it has not been shown that black cohosh and phyto-oestrogens reduce symptoms. Black cohosh has been linked to reports of liver damage. The Thuisarts decision cards also say that products with plants, herbs or vitamins do not help and can sometimes be dangerous. Tell your GP (huisarts) what you are taking.

Why do I gain weight during the menopause?

Thuisarts lists gaining weight as a symptom that the menopause can cause. The Voedingscentrum (Netherlands Nutrition Centre) writes that energy use at rest appears to decrease after the menopause. So if you eat the same as before, you may slowly gain weight. More explanation can be found under gaining and losing weight in the menopause years.

Does losing weight help against hot flushes?

According to the NHG-Standaard De overgang, losing weight and exercising more have health benefits, but it has not been shown that they reduce hot flushes. If you want to be less troubled by hot flushes, discuss this with your GP (huisarts). If you want to tackle your weight because it benefits your health and energy, support can help. The check shows which route fits your goal.

How do you get rid of menopause belly fat?

There is no quick fix. The Voedingscentrum (Netherlands Nutrition Centre) explains that women going through the menopause are more likely to have fat around the organs in the abdomen. Losing weight steadily, with attention to eating, exercise and sleep, is the basis. Measure your waist circumference to track your progress. A coach can help you keep up those habits.

What does bleeding after the menopause mean?

Bleeding after a year without periods is called postmenopausal bleeding. According to patient information based on the NVOG guideline, the cause is usually harmless, but it must always be examined. So contact your GP (huisarts). If you use hormones and have unexpected bleeding, call your GP as well.

What can I do about vaginal dryness during the menopause?

For vaginal dryness, the NHG-Standaard De overgang recommends trying hormone-free products first. Ask your GP (huisarts) or pharmacy which product suits you. If that does not help enough, discuss with your GP what else is possible. It is a symptom you can feel free to bring up.

Can I do the check if I still have periods?

Yes. Many women notice the first symptoms while they are still having periods, often with a more irregular cycle. The check then asks whether you use contraception, because you can still get pregnant. That is important when choosing a treatment. Your GP (huisarts) takes it into account in the advice.

What should I tell my GP about my menopause symptoms?

Tell them which symptoms you have, for how long and how much they affect your daily life. Also mention your cycle, medication and supplements, and conditions you have had, such as thrombosis or breast cancer. The result of the check sets this out for you; print it or save it as a PDF.

What does support with weight loss during the menopause cost?

Equivalent to €3.55 per day. Support from Overgewicht Nederland B.V. costs €108 per month or €1,295 per year, for 12 months. According to the provider, almost half of the coaching sessions are about hormones and the menopause. Medication is not included. The menopause check itself and the advice are free.

Is help with the menopause covered by insurance?

A visit to the GP (huisarts) is covered by basic health insurance (basisverzekering). If you have a BMI of 25 or more with a large waist circumference or a weight-related condition, you may be eligible for the combined lifestyle intervention (GLI), without compulsory excess (eigen risico). You pay for support from Overgewicht Nederland B.V. yourself. Ask your insurer what your supplementary insurance (aanvullende verzekering) covers.

What happens to my answers?

The check works in your own browser. As long as you do not send anything, your answers do not reach us. If you ask for a call back, we only send your contact details. Your health answers are only included if you tick a separate box for that, and they never go to an external form.
