Support with GLP-1 medication
Support with GLP-1 medication helps you get more out of the period in which you use a medicine such as semaglutide or liraglutide. The medicine suppresses your appetite, but it does not teach you new habits. On this page, you can read why lifestyle support is part of it, which medicines are reimbursed in October 2026 and what to look out for with side effects and stopping.
Good to know: the support is provided by Overgewicht Nederland B.V. (Amersfoort). If you fill in the form, your details go to that organisation. Amounts as stated by the provider on 21-10-2026. More about this site and the programme.
In brief
- Liraglutide and naltrexone/bupropion are covered under certain conditions, after at least one year of GLI (Zorginstituut Nederland, 03-02-2026).
- Semaglutide and tirzepatide are not reimbursed for obesity; the Zorginstituut expects to give advice in early 2027 (Zorgkiezer, 20-10-2026).
- Common side effects of semaglutide are nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain and vomiting; the basis remains fewer calories and more exercise (Apotheek.nl, 15-09-2026).
- According to the provider, the team at Overgewicht Nederland B.V. is specially trained in support with GLP-1 medication (provider information, 21-10-2026).
- No medicines are prescribed or sold via this site.
No advertising: this page is about support. We name active substances. Brand names are only given in brackets so you can recognise them. In the Netherlands, there is an advertising ban on prescription medicines. Whether a medicine suits you is something you decide together with your GP (huisarts) or specialist.
Why support alongside GLP-1 medicines
GLP-1 medicines work on your appetite. You are less hungry and feel full sooner. That can feel like a relief: finally the constant struggle with food goes quiet for a while. But a medicine does not automatically change what you eat, how you move or how you deal with stress and emotions. Apotheek.nl puts it like this: the basis remains fewer calories and more exercise (Apotheek.nl, 15-09-2026).
GPs also see medication as an addition, not a replacement. According to the NHG Standard (NHG-Standaard), a medicine only comes into the picture after a year of lifestyle treatment with too little result. You can read in detail how that assessment works under weight loss medication and the NHG Standard.
Support helps you make good use of the period with a medicine. You learn what to eat now that you have less appetite, you deal with side effects and you prepare for the moment you stop. That last part is often forgotten, while that is exactly when it becomes clear whether you have built new habits.
Reimbursement of obesity medicines: the situation in October 2026
Not every medicine is reimbursed. In February 2026, the Zorginstituut announced which medicines are paid for from the basic package (basispakket) and under which conditions. Nothing has been decided yet for semaglutide and tirzepatide. The Zorginstituut discussed them on 5 October 2026 and expects to give advice in early 2027 (Zorgkiezer, 20-10-2026). The Zorginstituut only wants to look at people with a BMI of at least 30 (Medisch Contact, 06-11-2025).
| Active substance | Reimbursed? | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Liraglutide (Saxenda) | Yes, under certain conditions | BMI 35+ with an accompanying condition or BMI 40+; first at least 1 year of GLI |
| Naltrexone/bupropion (Mysimba) | Yes, under certain conditions | BMI 30+, or 27+ with risk factors; first at least 1 year of GLI |
| Semaglutide (Wegovy) | No, not for obesity | Discussed on 5-10-2026, advice expected early 2027 |
| Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) | No, not for obesity | Discussed on 5-10-2026, advice expected early 2027 |

Please note: naltrexone/bupropion is not a GLP-1 medicine, but it is in the table because it is a reimbursed obesity medicine. Check with your own health insurer (zorgverzekeraar) exactly what your insurer pays. Whether you are eligible is explained in the eligibility criteria.
Coping with the side effects of GLP-1 medication
According to Apotheek.nl, 10 to 30 in 100 people who use semaglutide experience nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain or vomiting. Headache and tiredness also occur (Apotheek.nl, 15-09-2026). This can have a considerable impact on your daily life, especially at the start.
Adjusting your dose is up to your doctor, not the coaching. Coaching can, however, help you deal with the effects on your daily life. Think of questions such as: how do I eat enough when I feel sick? How do I keep exercising when I am tired? What do I do at a birthday party when I have little appetite? If the side effects are severe or persistent, or if you are worried, contact your GP (huisarts) or pharmacy.
Eating pattern, protein and preserving muscle on weight loss medication
When you have less appetite, you automatically eat less. That seems convenient, but it also carries a risk: you may eat too little of what your body needs. That is why it is wise to choose consciously what you do eat. A few general lifestyle tips that apply to everyone who is losing weight:
- Eat a varied diet. At every meal, choose vegetables, fruit, wholegrain products and a source of protein.
- Pay attention to protein. Protein helps preserve muscle. Discuss with your GP (huisarts) or a dietitian how much is enough for you.
- Keep moving. Especially exercise that uses your muscles, such as climbing stairs, cycling or strength exercises, helps you keep your muscles up to standard.
- Drink enough water. Especially if you suffer from constipation or diarrhoea.
- Eat slowly and in small portions. That can help with nausea.
Want to know how much of your weight is fat and how much is muscle? An InBody measurement in Amersfoort is mainly useful for following your own progress, measured under the same conditions. How much energy your body uses at rest is measured with a REE measurement of your resting metabolism.
When to stop GLP-1 medicines
Every medicine has a point at which you and your doctor assess whether it makes sense to continue. The NHG guideline (NHG-Standaard) sets out a stopping rule for this: if you have lost less than 5% after 12 weeks on the highest dose, you stop. That rule is explained in the explanation of weight loss medication and the stopping rule.
You may also stop for other reasons: side effects, the costs or because your doctor advises it. Your appetite may then come back. At that point, the habits you have built up while using the medicine will help you most. Coaching helps you prepare for this from the start, so that stopping does not become a leap in the dark. Do you notice that you think about food a lot again after stopping? Then read about food noise and constant thoughts about food.
Lifestyle coaching alongside weight loss injections
According to the provider, the team at Overgewicht Nederland B.V. is specially trained in supporting people on GLP-1 medication. According to the provider, the coaching lasts 12 months. No medicines are prescribed or sold through this site. You arrange the medicine through your own GP (huisarts) or specialist; the coaching focuses on your lifestyle.
What you can expect
From good coaching you can expect attention to your eating pattern, your exercise, your sleep and how you deal with side effects, as well as to the moment of stopping. How this works in this programme is something you can ask about in the introductory meeting. How the sessions take place, by phone, by video or in person, is agreed in the introductory meeting.
What you should not expect
Prescribing a medicine, adjusting the dose and choosing which medicine suits you are matters for your doctor, not for the coaching. And no one promises you a fixed number of kilos. For medical questions, go to your GP (huisarts) or the doctor who prescribed the medicine.
Questions for the introductory conversation
- How do you help if I have side effects?
- How do we prepare for stopping the medicine?
- How often do I talk to my coach and in what way?
- Can I also have measurements taken to monitor my muscles?
Do you have diabetes or heart problems as well as obesity, or do you take a lot of medication? Then read in complex obesity care how this is taken into account.

Frequently asked questions about coaching alongside GLP-1 medication
Why do I need support if I use semaglutide?
A medicine suppresses your appetite, but does not teach you new habits. Apotheek.nl writes that the basis remains fewer calories and more exercise. Support helps you eat well while you have little appetite, deal with side effects and prepare for the moment you stop. That way you work on habits for the period without the medicine.
Is semaglutide (Wegovy) reimbursed in 2026?
No, semaglutide (Wegovy) is not reimbursed for obesity under basic health insurance (basisverzekering). The Zorginstituut discussed reimbursement on 5 October 2026 and expects to give advice in early 2027. Nothing has been decided yet. Liraglutide and naltrexone/bupropion are reimbursed under certain conditions. See the table on this page for the conditions per medicine.
Is tirzepatide (Mounjaro) reimbursed for obesity?
No, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) is not reimbursed for obesity under basic health insurance (basisverzekering), as of October 2026. The Zorginstituut discussed the medicine together with semaglutide on 5 October 2026. Advice is expected in early 2027. The Zorginstituut only wants to assess possible reimbursement for people with a BMI of at least 30. Ask your insurer about the current situation.
What side effects does semaglutide have?
The most common side effects are feeling sick, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain and vomiting. According to Apotheek.nl, 10 to 30 in 100 people experience these. Headache and tiredness also occur. If you have severe or persistent symptoms, contact your GP (huisarts) or pharmacy. A coach can, however, help you with eating and exercise when you feel less well.
Can semaglutide cause muscle pain?
Muscle pain is not in the list of side effects that we take from Apotheek.nl: feeling sick, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache and tiredness. That is not a complete list, so it cannot be ruled out. If you have muscle pain, report it to your pharmacy or GP; there may also be another cause. If you have suddenly started exercising more, that can also cause muscle pain. Your coach helps you build up gradually.
When should I stop taking a GLP-1 medicine?
According to the NHG guideline (NHG-Standaard), you stop if you have lost less than 5% after 12 weeks on the highest dose. You may also stop because of side effects, the costs or on your doctor's advice. Always make that decision together with your GP (huisarts) or specialist. You can read more about that rule on the page about weight loss medication.
What happens when I stop the weight loss injections?
When you stop, your appetite may come back. Then the habits you built while using them help you most, such as a regular eating pattern and daily exercise. That is why it pays to think about stopping right from the start. Support helps you prepare for that transition, so you are not suddenly left without something to hold on to.
Why am I not losing weight with semaglutide (Wegovy)?
Not everyone loses the same amount of weight with semaglutide, and the cause differs from person to person. Apotheek.nl writes that the basis remains fewer calories and more exercise; the medicine does not do that work on its own. Dose, sleep, other medication and your eating pattern can also play a role. According to the NHG Standard (NHG-Standaard), you stop if, after 12 weeks on the highest dose, you have lost less than 5%. Discuss this with your doctor; you do not get medication via this site.
Do I have to follow a GLI first before I can get weight loss medication?
For reimbursement, yes. The Dutch Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut) sets at least one year of combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) as a condition for liraglutide and naltrexone/bupropion. The NHG guideline (NHG-Standaard) also mentions a year of lifestyle treatment with insufficient results before a medicine is considered. You can read more about the reimbursed programme in the combined lifestyle intervention.
What does a programme with support alongside semaglutide (Wegovy) look like?
Per day: €3.55. According to Overgewicht Nederland B.V., you get 12 months of coaching for €108 per month or €1,295 per year, from a team specially trained in supporting people on GLP-1 medication. No medicines are prescribed or sold through this site; you can only get a medicine on a doctor's prescription. The sessions cover eating, exercise, side effects in your daily life and the moment of stopping. How they take place is agreed in the introductory meeting.
Do you need to stop semaglutide before surgery?
That is decided by your treating doctor or the team operating on you, so never stop on your own initiative. For every planned operation or procedure under anaesthesia, say that you use semaglutide or another GLP-1 medicine. You will then receive instructions that suit your situation and the procedure. If in doubt, call your GP or the pharmacy that dispenses the medicine.
How do you taper off semaglutide?
How you taper off or stop semaglutide is something you agree with the doctor who prescribes it; our sources do not include a fixed tapering schedule for everyone. What matters is what happens afterwards, because your appetite may come back. So prepare in advance with a regular eating pattern and daily exercise. You can read more about the stopping rule in the NHG agreements on weight loss medication.
What should you avoid eating when using semaglutide (Wegovy)?
Our sources do not mention forbidden foods. Because feeling sick, abdominal pain and vomiting are common side effects according to Apotheek.nl, you may find that small portions, eating slowly and lighter meals are easier to tolerate. Make sure you still eat a varied diet and drink enough even with little appetite. If symptoms persist, ask your pharmacy or GP for advice.
What are the disadvantages of semaglutide (Wegovy)?
The main disadvantages are side effects, the costs and what happens when you stop. Apotheek.nl mentions feeling sick, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain and vomiting in 10 to 30 in 100 people. For obesity, semaglutide is not reimbursed under basic health insurance (basisverzekering); advice from the Zorginstituut is expected in early 2027. After stopping, your appetite may come back. Weigh this up with your doctor.
Is there support with weight loss injections in Amersfoort?
Yes, Overgewicht Nederland B.V. is based in Amersfoort and, according to the provider, has a team specially trained in supporting people on GLP-1 medication. In Amersfoort you can also have measurements taken, such as a REE measurement and an InBody measurement. You can only get the weight loss injection itself on a prescription from your doctor. You can read more about the region in obesity care around Amersfoort.
