Support with overweight and obesity

By Gijs Bodenstaff · Last reviewed:

That works out at €3.55 per day. Support with overweight here means: 12 months of personal coaching from Overgewicht Nederland B.V. in Amersfoort, for €108 per month or €1,295 per year. The programme is not a replacement for your GP (huisarts) or for the reimbursed combined lifestyle intervention (GLI). It is intended for people who want more personal attention and pay for it themselves. On this page, you can read what you get, what you do not get, and how signing up works.

Good to know: the support is provided by Overgewicht Nederland B.V. (Amersfoort). If you fill in the form, your details go to that organisation. Amounts as stated by the provider on 21-10-2026. More about this site and the programme.

In brief

  • That works out at €3.55 per day. The standard programme lasts 12 months and costs €108 per month by direct debit, or €1,295 per year (Overgewicht Nederland B.V., 21-10-2026).
  • According to the provider, almost half of the coaching sessions are about hormones and the menopause in women (Overgewicht Nederland B.V., 21-10-2026).
  • According to the provider, the team is specially trained in PCOS and in support with GLP-1 medication (Overgewicht Nederland B.V., 21-10-2026).
  • About €2.84 per day. A research programme gives 15 months of support for the same €1,295, with three extensive measurement sessions in Amersfoort (Overgewicht Nederland B.V., 21-10-2026).
  • According to the ACM, a subscription has a first term of no more than 1 year and can then be cancelled with a notice period of no more than 1 month (ACM, 29-07-2025).

What support with overweight involves

The core of the programme is a series of coaching sessions, spread over 12 months. You will hear exactly what those sessions cover in the introductory meeting. Think in advance about what you eat, how you move, how you sleep and what goes on in your head when you want to lose weight. A year is deliberately long. Many people manage to lose weight for a few weeks. The hard part comes after that, when motivation drops and everyday life returns.

What is striking is what the sessions are about in practice. According to the provider, almost half of the coaching sessions are about hormones and the menopause in women. In addition, according to the provider, the team is specially trained in PCOS and in support with GLP-1 medication. According to the provider, there is also experience with people with complex medical problems.

How the sessions take place, by phone, by video or in person in Amersfoort, is not specified on this site. You agree on that in the introductory meeting. If, alongside the sessions, you want to know how your body is doing, you can also go to the provider for a measurement of your resting metabolism and for an InBody measurement of fat and muscle, with personal advice.

Who this support programme is for

The programme is for people with overweight or obesity who do not want to face it alone. You can first check for yourself where you stand with the BMI calculator on this site. Your BMI is not an entry requirement. It is useful, though, to know where you stand before you have a conversation.

You may recognise yourself in one of these situations:

  • You have tried to lose weight several times before and the weight kept coming back.
  • You are going through the menopause and your body reacts differently than it used to.
  • You have PCOS and notice that standard advice does little for you.
  • You are using a GLP-1 medicine or are considering it with your doctor, and you want help with eating, exercise and stopping later on.
  • You think about food all day and want to know what you can do about it.
  • Besides your weight, you also have other medical problems and want support that takes them into account.

Not sure whether the programme suits you? Choose "Not sure yet, call me first" in the form. Then you can discuss that first.

What you can and cannot expect from a coach

Good support is not a miracle cure. It is someone who thinks along with you, holds up an honest mirror and helps you stick to your plans when things get tough. This is what you can expect from good support, and what you can check in the introductory meeting:

  • A plan that fits your life, work and family, not a standard schedule.
  • Sessions with room for setbacks, without judgement.
  • Clear agreements in advance about the term, payment and cancellation, in writing.
  • A coach who refers you to your GP if something needs medical attention.

This is what you should not expect, and to be honest, it is also a good sign if no one promises it to you:

  • A fixed number of kilos or a percentage of weight loss. No figures are known about the results of this programme.
  • A diagnosis, prescription or medical treatment. For that, you go to your GP or specialist.
  • Reimbursement by your health insurer. Nothing is known about this; do not count on it.

Support programmes alongside the GLI and your GP

This may be the most important paragraph on this page. In the Netherlands, there is a reimbursed lifestyle treatment: the combined lifestyle intervention, GLI for short. It is part of the basic package (basispakket) and you access it via your GP (huisarts). You can read how that works and who is eligible in the explanation of the reimbursed lifestyle programme. The GLI is also the first step if you later want a medicine for obesity: the Zorginstituut requires at least 1 year of GLI before reimbursing liraglutide or naltrexone/bupropion (Zorginstituut Nederland, 03-02-2026).

The programme from Overgewicht Nederland B.V. is not reimbursed. You pay for it yourself. Why would you do that when there is a reimbursed route? People choose it as an addition or as an alternative, for example because they want more personal support, are looking for specific knowledge about the menopause, PCOS or GLP-1, or because they do not meet the conditions for the GLI. Would you rather start via the GP? Then first read how to approach the conversation with your GP.

In all cases, your GP (huisarts) remains your first point of contact for medical questions. If you use medication, or want to know whether a medicine suits you, discuss it with your GP. What the guidelines say about weight loss medication can be found on the page about weight loss medication for obesity.

The difference between monthly and yearly is small: €1 over the whole year. So the choice is mainly about how you prefer to pay. The research programme is the cheapest per month, but you take part in scientific research. First read carefully what taking part in the research means.

Paying monthly or yearly: what the rules for subscriptions say

If you pay monthly, according to the provider the amount is collected by direct debit. That way you do not have to pay a large amount in one go. If you pay yearly, you make one payment in advance.

In the Netherlands, subscriptions are subject to rules explained by the Authority for Consumers and Markets (Autoriteit Consument en Markt, ACM):

  • The first fixed term is no more than 1 year. Longer is only allowed if this is demonstrably reasonable.
  • After that first period, you can always cancel, with a notice period of no more than 1 month.
  • It must be possible to cancel in writing, and in the same way as you entered into the contract.

What does that mean for you? If you choose 12 months, you are in principle committed for a year. In the introductory meeting, ask exactly how the term, renewal and cancellation are arranged, and read the terms and conditions you receive in writing before you start. Only sign once you understand them.

Support in specific situations

Not everyone who gets in touch has the same question. That is why there is a separate explanation on this site for a number of situations:

Frequently asked questions about support with overweight

How much does support for overweight cost per month?

About €3.55 per day. The programme from Overgewicht Nederland B.V. costs €108 per month, for 12 months, by direct debit. That is €1,296 in total. If you pay yearly, it is €1,295 in one payment. With the research programme, you get 15 months for €1,295 (€2.84 per day), which works out at €86.33 per month. All amounts are according to the provider, reference date 21-10-2026.

Is this support programme covered by health insurance?

Nothing is known about this, so assume you will pay for it yourself. The reimbursed route is the combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) via your GP (huisarts). If you want to try that first, read the explanation of the GLI and the entry requirements. You can also use the paid programme as an addition.

What is the difference between a GLI and paid weight loss support?

The combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) is a recognised lifestyle programme that runs via the GP (huisarts) and is covered by the basic package (basispakket). You pay for this programme yourself, and you do not need a referral (verwijzing) for it. It consists of coaching sessions. According to the provider, almost half of them are about hormones and the menopause, and the team is specially trained in PCOS and GLP-1 medication. You can also discuss with your GP which route suits you.

What questions should I ask in the introductory meeting?

In any case, ask how the coaching sessions work and how often, whether and when you come to Amersfoort for measurements, what is included in the price and which terms and conditions apply. Tell them yourself which medicines you use and which conditions you have, so your coach can take them into account. Write your questions down beforehand so you do not forget anything. You prepare your GP visit separately with the route via your GP.

Can I cancel early if I pay monthly?

That depends on the terms and conditions you receive in writing before you start. According to the ACM, the first fixed term of a subscription can be no more than 1 year. After that, you can always cancel with a notice period of no more than 1 month. In the introductory meeting, ask exactly how this is arranged for the programme.

How long does a weight loss support programme last?

The standard programme lasts 12 months. The research programme lasts 15 months. A year gives you room: the first weeks often go well, and keeping it up afterwards is the hard part. In a longer programme, there is time for setbacks, holidays and busy periods, and you can adjust course together.

Are the coaching sessions by phone, by video or in person?

That is not fixed and you agree on it in the introductory meeting. Feel free to say what you prefer. The measurements, such as the REE measurement and the InBody, do take place in Amersfoort. If you live further away, ask how often you need to come to Amersfoort before you sign.

Can I get support if I am already using weight loss medication?

Yes, according to the provider, the team is specially trained in support with GLP-1 medication. Prescribing and adjusting medication remains with your doctor, not with the support programme. You can read what support alongside a GLP-1 medicine can do in the explanation of coaching with GLP-1.

How many kilos can you lose with a weight loss coach?

That is impossible to say, and no one should promise you a number. No figures are known about the results of this programme. How much weight you lose depends on your body, your health, medication and your situation. A good coach talks with you about achievable goals and about more than just the scales, such as sleep, energy and eating behaviour.

What support is available for people with obesity?

There are several routes, and it usually starts with the GP (huisarts). The combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) helps you with diet, exercise and behaviour as a whole and is covered if you meet the conditions. According to the guideline, the GP can also refer you to a mental health practice nurse (POH-GGZ) or psychologist, and consider a medicine after a year of GLI. You can also choose coaching that you pay for yourself. An overview of all options can be found under treatments for overweight and obesity.

How do you lose weight as a woman with overweight?

As a woman, you lose weight on the same basis as everyone else, fewer calories and more exercise, but hormones often play a role. The Voedingscentrum (Netherlands Nutrition Centre) writes that energy use at rest appears to decrease after the menopause and that women then more often build up fat around the organs. According to the guideline, overweight is more common with PCOS. So look at your whole situation, not just the scales. You can read more about this under weight loss during the menopause.

What does weight loss with medical support mean?

It means that, alongside your own efforts, a healthcare provider keeps an eye on your health, such as your GP (huisarts), a dietitian or a medical specialist. They pay attention to, for example, blood pressure, blood values and medication. A coach is not a doctor and does not adjust medication. If you have diabetes, heart problems or several conditions at the same time, it is important that everyone knows what the others are doing. Read more about this under complex obesity care for multiple conditions.

What does a dietitian do for overweight?

A dietitian helps you adjust your eating pattern so that it fits your health, your daily routine and what you enjoy. You discuss what and when you eat and which changes are achievable for you. With conditions such as diabetes, the dietitian takes these into account. Within the combined lifestyle intervention (GLI), diet is one of the components, together with exercise and behaviour. Check with your health insurer whether a dietitian is covered for you.

How do you start losing weight if you are very overweight?

Start with a conversation with your GP (huisarts), especially if you also have health complaints or use medication. Your GP can look at your weight, blood pressure and risks and point you to the reimbursed combined lifestyle intervention (GLI). Then choose one or two small changes that you can really keep up, instead of everything at once. If you want to know where you stand beforehand, you can first calculate your BMI. Support mainly helps with keeping it up in the long term.

Is support for obesity different from support for overweight?

The basis is the same, but with obesity the health risks are greater and healthcare providers are more often involved. According to the Gezondheidsmonitor 2024 by RIVM, CBS and GGD, 15.6% of adults in the Netherlands have obesity and 50.0% have overweight. With obesity, medication or surgery may also be considered, always via your doctor. You can read exactly how the two terms differ under the difference between overweight and obesity.
