Contact with the doctor: chat message or conversation

With a medical weight loss programme, you want to know who is looking at your situation. Goodweigh literally writes on its homepage: "In most cases, no phone or video call is needed." After your questionnaire, the doctor asks their questions via chat. That is quick and fits into a busy schedule. You can answer whenever it suits you, without an appointment.

Overgewicht Nederland chooses a different route. According to overgewichtnederland.nl, they do the intake and coaching by phone or video call, and the treatment always takes place under the supervision of a doctor. The page about the weight loss programme states that you decide together with Dr Aarts during an intake conversation which method suits you. In a conversation you can ask follow-up questions, the doctor can pay attention to your reactions and it feels less like a form. If you have several conditions or are unsure between routes, a conversation by phone or video with a doctor is often pleasant. Important: the fact that a doctor may prescribe medication says nothing yet about whether it is the right step for you. The NHG guideline (NHG-Standaard) only mentions medication after a year of lifestyle treatment with too little result. Teams and coaching side by side

On paper, the teams look similar: both have doctors with BIG numbers and lifestyle coaches. The composition does differ, though. On its team page, Goodweigh mentions nurses and a pharmacist as well as doctors. A pharmacist in the team can be handy if you have questions about using your medication.

At Overgewicht Nederland, the medical director is a bariatric surgeon: Dr Edo Aarts, according to the doctors page with more than 18 years of experience with obesity treatment programmes. Alongside him, doctors Azzeddine el Osrouti and Sani Cosgun are listed on the site, each with a BIG number. A psychologist is also involved, with attention to eating behaviour, thoughts and feelings. The type of coaching is different too. According to its own site, Goodweigh offers unlimited chat with a health coach, and once you have started you can schedule a (video) call with that coach. In its own comparison, Overgewicht Nederland mentions 400 minutes of 1-to-1 coaching and contact every two weeks, plus an app. According to the provider's homepage, the intake and coaching take place by phone or video call; you agree the details in the introductory meeting. Treatment routes and measurements

Goodweigh focuses on an online programme with coaching and, where the doctor considers it appropriate, medication. One advantage that Overgewicht Nederland does not mention in the same way: Goodweigh also has a treatment for the menopause. If you are going through the menopause and want specific help with it, that is good to know. Overgewicht Nederland does say that almost half of its coaching sessions with women are about hormones and the menopause; see weight loss during the menopause.

Overgewicht Nederland has several routes under one roof. You can choose lifestyle support, medication as an injection pen or pill, or the Allurion gastric balloon. The balloon is provided through the Allurion Kliniek, which belongs to the same B.V. This means you can switch within one team if your first approach does not work well. A second difference is measurements. Goodweigh does not mention a physical location. In Amersfoort, Overgewicht Nederland measures your resting energy expenditure with an REE measurement in Amersfoort and your body composition with an InBody measurement of fat and muscle. According to the costs page, the 15-month research programme includes 3 blood tests and 2 measurements of your resting metabolism. These measurements are not a requirement for losing weight, but they do give your coach more to go on than just the number on the scales. Prices and how you pay

Goodweigh states "from €3.91 per day (€119 per month)" for the programme. That is a monthly amount: you do not have to pay a large sum all at once. We could not find full details on the homepage of exactly what is included and how long you are committed for; ask about this before you start. A nice detail: according to Goodweigh, you get your money back if the doctor considers the programme unsuitable for you, and you can sometimes claim the medical consultation from your health insurer.

About €3.55 per day. Overgewicht Nederland charges €1,295 for 12 months of support, which works out at about €108 per month. According to the costs page, this includes the medical intake, a treatment plan, support from a doctor, lifestyle coaching and an evaluation. The costs page states payment at the start; in the information given to this site, the provider also mentions monthly payment by direct debit. So ask which option applies to you. At Overgewicht Nederland you pay for medication separately; whether that is also the case at Goodweigh is not stated on their homepage. The research programme costs the same amount but lasts 15 months. The gastric balloon is a separate route costing €4,195 (€22.99 per day over 6 months of coaching) and is not covered by health insurance.

Also be aware of what the ACM (the Dutch consumer authority) says about subscriptions: a first fixed term is in principle no longer than 1 year, after that the notice period may be no more than 1 month, and you must be able to cancel in the same way as you signed up. This applies to every provider.

Which provider suits whom

Goodweigh may suit you better if you:

prefer writing to phoning and want to arrange everything in your own time;
do not want a fixed 12-month programme;
are looking specifically for help with menopause symptoms;
want the certainty of getting your money back if the doctor considers you unsuitable.

Overgewicht Nederland may suit you better if you:

want to speak to a doctor and not just chat;
value having a bariatric surgeon as medical director;
want help from a psychologist with eating behaviour and feelings;
